Also, this has an active modding community (which significantly improves the graphics, I highly recommend doing that).ĭeceptively linear would be a good way to describe the gameplay of System Shock 2. Hopefully in the future this game will be remastered. Overall, this is a masterful piece of art, and definitely deserves every single ounce of praise it receives. Unfortunately, the final boss was mediocre at best, especially after all of the build-up leading to the final SHODAN. This is one of those rare cases where games actually kept me really tense during my playthrough, and the constant flow of adrenaline within me just made it oh-so-satisfying every time I completed an objective. This game kept me absolutely hooked for the entirety of my playthrough, and genuinely terrified me in ways I didn't think were possible. There are many different combinations to playstyle, each starting from three main classes: weapons, tech and psi. The RPG elements are expansive, yet cohesive.

I found the research reports very interesting to read, especially with the use of many different real scientific terminologies, which satisfied the scientist within me. The level design and game systems are way ahead of its time, and this game has aged really well (besides the graphics) even 20 years later. Meaning, the story is not enforced unto the player, it's an option for them to be immersed. Its cyberpunk atmosphere plays very well to the feeling of dread of technology, and the story is scattered through audio logs and emails. System Shock 2 is the perfect blend between FPS, RPG and survival horror. In this respect the game is somewhat similar to that other excellent FPS/RPG/adventure hybrid, Deus Ex.Arguably the best '90s game I've ever played. This game is absolutely brilliant it just oozes atmosphere - in fact this has to be one of the scariest games I've ever played, and the high level of interaction with the environment makes for a very satisfying gaming experience. There is a complex storyline (with quite a few twists & surprises along the way) which unfolds itself by reading e-mail messages and logs you come across. There is a lot of interaction with the environment involved, like terminals & locks you can hack into, cyber-implants that enhance your skills, computer systems that have to be activated (or shut down), weapons that can be repaired and upgraded, etc.

It has elements of adventure games and computer role playing games. Like the original "System Shock" game, this game has elements of first person shooter games, but it is much mure than that.

You have to work your way around the ship, trying to stay alive and find out what the hell is going on. You get to play a lone(?) survivor of some mysterious disaster, inside a big spaceship, somewhere in deep space. "Neuromancer" meets "Alien" meets "Night of the Living Dead".
